The NFL's bid to have its case linked to how it enforces its substance abuse policy nationwide was denied by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.

It was the final defeat for the league, which has been barred by a Minnesota court from suspending Vikings defensive linemen Kevin Williams and Pat Williams in the wake of their positive test for a banned duruietic more than two years ago. The Supreme Court declined to hear the league's appeal, which was posted on the court's order list.

"Today's decision does not address in any way the merits of the claims made by the players, which have been rejected by every federal and state court to consider them," the league said in a statement.

The lineman, who are not related, argued that the NFL didn't have a right to enforce its doping standards in Minnesota, but they lost their case. The judge, however, stayed the ruling in April pending their appeal in state appeals court, which will hear the case on Nov. 17. There's no set timetable when the decision would be announced.

The players claim they unknowingly ingested bumetanide found in the supplement StarCaps. Such drugs are banned because they can rapidly dilute urine to mask the presence of steroids. Under the strict liability standard used by all professional and Olympic sports, athletes are fully responsible for what substances they consume -- even if a violation was due to an adulterated supplement.

The NFL again advocated a bill pushed by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., legislation that would mandate the doping standards for all major sports leagues be accepted by every state. The bill was introduced in September and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

RENTON, Wash. -- Three men who had to stay on the sidelines in Sunday's embarrassing 41-7 Seattle loss to the New York Giants could be the keys for the Seahawks as they move forward.

Seattle, cumulatively beaten in consecutive weeks by a total score of 74-10 by Oakland and New York, is reeling, and coach Pete Carroll doesn't disguise the ugliness of that fact.

"We're fortunate to be where we're at (4-4),'' Carroll said Monday. "We have a lot of work to do; there's a lot of stuff we have to get done. We have to get the line of scrimmage going on both sides of the ball. We got beat there for the second week in a row, and we have to do a better job.

"We know that if we're going to have a chance to get the second half (of the season) going the way we want it to, we've got to get better up front. That's really a big focus for us.''

The Seahawks could make things easier for themselves if they can just get their best group together again. That includes getting Matt Hasselbeck (concussion) back at quarterback, Brandon Mebane (calf injury) patrolling the defensive line and Russell Okung (high angle sprain) returning to left tackle. The Okung return would enable Chester Pitts to slide to left guard, regarded as his best position.

"In my wishful, hopeful mind,'' Carroll said, "you'll see the quarterback come back, you'll see Mebane come back, and a chance that Russell and a couple of other guys (will come back).''

Although nothing is official, it's possible that the Seahawks could be a much healthier team this weekend in Arizona in an NFC West matchup with the Cardinals.

"Matt had a good workout today,'' Hasselbeck said. "He's responding well, the best he has, and he looks very good at this point. We don't practice until Wednesday, and I think (the doctors) will wait all the way until then (before clearing him to play).''

Carroll said that Okung, too, had a good workout Monday and added that the first round draft pick is "very close'' to returning.
Seattle, which stood alone in first place at 4-2 before falling afoul of the Raiders and Giants, is 4-4 in the West and tied with St. Louis for first place in the division. The Seahawks are smarting, there's no doubt about it, after the last two weeks, but there's no time now to look over their shoulders.

There's half a season still to play, and the division is open to any of the four teams to win.

"The second half is what the conversation is about,'' Carroll said. "We talked about it today in the meetings about where we stand and what the league looks like, where everybody else is. There's a lot of teams right in the middle -- like 17 teams within striking distance. So it's what you do with it now is what counts.

"That's what we're setting our sights on, and we'll see how far we can go, starting with Arizona.''

For Carroll personally, the losses to the Raiders and Giants were the first back-to-back losses for him as a coach since 2001, when he was in his first year with the USC Trojans after leaving his first NFL head coaching job with New England (1997-99).

"I'm not sleeping as well as I'd like,'' Carroll said. "I'm racking my brain to figure out what I can do. I'm OK about taking it (the losses), but I'm anxious about fixing it.''

Scott Carson is angry. Are you thinking the same thing we are? Who is he?

Carson is the next guy in line on Herschel Walker's MMA journey. Apparently, the 40-year-old was shredded on the Internet over the weekend and is firing back.

"I'll tell you one thing. I’m a lot better fighter than the one I’ve been reading about on the Internet," Carson said. "This is a huge deal for me, a tremendous opportunity, but you’d think I was nothing going off what has been written by some of these keyboard warriors, who I doubt have ever stepped in a cage. It’s a lot easier to sit in front of a computer and talk (stuff) than it is to actually fight."

Coming off a loss in June, Carson is 4-1. That fight was his first since 2001.

"I was out a long time because of my back and I did rehab for a while," said Carson, who trained for years with Chuck Liddell before he joined Reign Training Center in Lake Forest. "I never thought much about not fighting again; I always wanted to come back."

The light heavyweight was waiting for things to fall into place before he made his return to active fighting.

"But I couldn’t do anything until I was 100 percent. Once I got healthy again, I got better the more I trained," Carson said. "I’ve helped a lot of guys get ready for fights while waiting for my chance. I had a few fights lined up before my last fight, but they all fell out for one reason or another."

Carson doesn't want to be written off simply because he's 40.

"They say I’m old at 40 but I don’t feel 40 and I certainly don’t look 40. I think I look 30 and I’m in great shape. I’m ripped, just like Herschel," said Carson.

"I’m going to be more ready for Dec. 4 than I have been for any other fight. I plan to shut up all the critics, each and every one of them. Let them write something factual after they’ve seen me on Dec. 4."

This week, get ready for an overblown "fight," a fairly decent actual fight, and sad news for one of the fighters. Read on for spoilers and a full fight recap.

-- Team GSP check-in of the week: The boys in red are not happy that their bro Dane Sayers did not get the wild card. Michael Johnson is also not happy with Alex "Bruce LeRoy" Caceres for shirking on training. They had more words back at the house, and hope to fight each other in the quarterfinal round.

-- Team Kos check-in of the week: Wildcard discussion is rampant at Kos's practices, as well. Since Marc Stevens was choked out so quickly in his first-round fight, he has a lot to prove. While his team was working hard, Kos continued his verbal sparring with Tate, the medic from Team GSP. He continued to disparage his profession, and the two used a garbage can and a plunger to spar.

-- Lame Kos prank of the week: Koscheck depantsed Tate as the two walked into weigh-ins for Stevens and Wilkinson. This led to Kos and Tate jawing (again), Kos bringing up the greasing allegations levied on GSP, and then Kos grabbing Tate by the neck. While breaking up the fight, Kos also elbowed Sayers in the face. Through it all, GSP sat calmly. THIS is why the man's the top ranked fighter in the world.

-- Conspiracy theory of the week: Kos said that GSP hired Tate just to come in and get underneath Koscheck's skin.

-- Sadness of the week: Not long before his fight with Stevens, Wilkinson found out that his Nana died. His mother called him to tell the news and said, "Nana would kick your ass if you came home."

Wildcard bout: Marc Stevens (Team Koscheck) vs. Aaron Wilkinson (Team Koscheck)

Round 1: The gym was eerily quiet, as Koscheck and his coaches didn't corner either fighter since they were both from Team Kos. GSP and his team stayed silent, so the only two voices were those of the fighters cornering Stevens and Wilkinson. Stevens used an early takedown to take Wilkinson's back, move to full mount for a moment then return to controlling the back. Wilkinson reversed to get top position, and finished out the round by throwing elbows and knees, but Stevens clearly owned the round.

Round 2: Stevens grabbed a kick for a takedown and was (again) caught in a guillotine. He was forced to tap.

"I guess I need to work on my guillotine defense," Stevens said after the fight. That's probably a good idea.

Quarterfinal discussion of the week: GSP and his fighters want Johnson to fight Bruce LeRoy, which Koscheck sees as a ploy to get rid of LeRoy and protect Johnson. After that, Kos starts asking questions of GSP's fighters, and surprisingly, GSP gives up the goods on all his fighters.

Not surprising? That Dana White gave GSP the fights he wanted in the quarterfinals.

Question as a headline because it's just a report and not verified? Absolutely? I'm Ron Burgandy? (Sorry, it was on TBS Sunday night.)

The LA Times reports that Phil Jackson said Sunday that Derrick Caracter or Devin Ebanks could be assigned to the D-League. Which is curious.

The Lakers folded their D-League affiliate the D-Fenders for a year to get their house in order and try and come up with a business plan that wasn't diametrically opposed to the seldom-pursued goal of actually making money. So now the Lakers would be sending the players down to Bakersfield to the Jam. Which they don't really have a relationship with. And considering the fact that Caracter and Ebanks have both shown considerable talent (and this on a Lakers team that makes good players look average), it seems odd to send them somewhere they don't have coverage to watch over them.

Both would fit in well in the D-League, though, getting to work against comparable competition without having, you know, the Bean screaming in their ear for every missed pass or Jackson waxing poetic about the mysteries of the universe while they both just need to know where to rotate to off the dribble penetration. The question will be whether A) the Jam will benefit from an influx of Laker talent in their ticket sales and B) whether the Jam will wind up with a team that allows one or both of the two to develop without getting hammered on every play.

Interesting stuff. I miss the D-Fenders already. But hey, great seats!

If Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris had done anything else but defend rookie running back LeGarrette Blount it would have been a shock.

Blount, a 247-pound back, missed a hole on fourth-and-one from inside the Atlanta 5-yard line in the closing moments of the Buccaneers' 27-21 loss in the Georgia Dome. The play was designed as a dive play, but Blount bounced outside and was tackled.

Morris said the mistake could have been made by a veteran, as well as a rookie like Blount.

"He didn't run the wrong play, he just made the wrong cut,'' Morris said. "We're all great running backs the next day. If he bounces out there and runs over DeCoud and scores a touchdown, we're all having a pool party.

"But he stuck his foot in the ground, he made a cut, his vision at that time was different than ours would be today looking at tape and he should go down hill and he didn't. That happens. That's part of a young football team making a mistake but we'll come back and get better from it.''

"That can happen with a vet. You can't second-guess the play. You don't want to go down that road."

Morris said the referees failed to restart the 25-second play clock after LeGarrette Blount was stopped inches short of a first down at the Atlanta 2-yard line on that possession.

Referee Terry McAulay spotted the ball after the play, but did not restart the clock.

On top of that, Morris said, the Bucs sideline headsets went off and quarterback Josh Freeman had to use Tampa's last timeout to get a play in from the sidelines.

"I think they made a mistake,'' Morris said. "We're in Atlanta and somehow our headsets went out in that play. We had to run out there and tell our quarterback and ran out of time. We had to use our timeout because we didn't have enough time to get to the line of scrimmage and snap the play because our headsets were out.

"You're supposed to re-set the (play) game clock when you're spotting the ball and we didn't get to re-set the game clock and our head sets didn't come back at all. So we never had the luxury of talking to our quarterback during that play. It is what it is. We had to use our timeout right there.''

ATLANTA -- Unlike some folks (OK, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), they don't boast that they are the best team in the National Football Conference, which they are.

Well, during those times when the New York Giants aren't.

The Atlanta Falcons don't boast, period.

They don't even flaunt their 6-2 record, which rivals only that in their conference of the Giants. And, come to think of it, even when you include the entire NFL, just the New England Patriots, the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens of the AFC join the Giants with a record as splendid as that of the Falcons.

So here's the real question: Are the Falcons the best team in the whole league? The answer: They're working on it. They're doing so quietly. Plus, not that they make a big deal of it, but they're more concerned about what they think of themselves than the opinions of others when it comes to their considerable strengths and dwindling weaknesses.

They're also pleased that the big and bad Ravens are coming to town for a nationally televised game on Thursday night, but they're not doing some of those Ray Lewis' chants and dances over the significance over it all beyond it possibly adding to their victory total.

That's why, if you're among the rest of the NFL, you should be afraid. You should be afraid of the new Dirty Birds who keep flying higher and higher with a bunch of scary things.

'I don't mind my wedding has turned into kind of a myth,' Perry says of outlandish rumors.

MADRID — Did you hear the story about the elephant at Katy Perry and Russell Brand's wedding? How about the one about the man-eating tiger that gatecrashed the ceremony and had to be beaten back by armed guards?

Of course you did, because in the days following Perry and Brand's wedding in India last month, it seemed like everyone was talking about the couple's ceremony. And not only was most of what they were saying bizarrely animal-based, it was also incorrect.

To their credit, the newlyweds didn't get mad about the reams of misinformation circulating about their marriage. In fact, they found all of it to be pretty funny, as Perry told MTV News on Sunday night (November 7) on the purple carpet for the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards, where Perry performed "Firework" and took home the Best Video prize for "California Gurls."

"I actually I was too busy getting married [to notice]," she laughed. "I don't mind my wedding has turned into kind of a myth. It's kind of cool. We kept it kind of private, so when we heard some of the things that were going around we were like, 'Ah, that's hilarious.' "

And on the EMA carpet — which Perry walked arm-in-arm with Brand, marking the couple's first public appearance since their mythological wedding — KP was not only still laughing about all those rumors, she was positively glowing with wedded bliss. And she was more than willing to share a little bit of that joy with us.

"[The wedding] was fantastic," she laughed.

The 2010 MTV EMA show airs on MTV2 on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, and an edited, performance-heavy version will be broadcast Friday, November 12, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

Ah, what could've been. There was a day when Dana White dreamed of matching Brock Lesnar and Fedor Emelianenko at Cowboys Stadium. That could still be a mega-fight but some of the luster has worn off since both have now fallen in 2010. White Tweeted a little smiley face the night that Fedor was upset by Fabricio Werdum back in June. The Russian contigent that works with Fedor waited a few days, but now it's their turn to chuckle at Lesnar's fall from grace.

"I have long said that Lesnar is more of a product of UFC’s PR rather than a serious fighter and that fight clearly confirmed it," said Fedor's manager Vadim Finkelchtein in an interview on AllBoxing.com.

"I do not want to say that Lesnar is a nobody, but he has very little experience. What does he have six fights in MMA? He's a pure product UFC, who met a real fighter and he lost."

He said Cain Velasquez can truly be promoted as one of the best heavyweights in the world.

"In my opinion, he is a very good fighter. Capable and strong," said Finkelchtein. "The UFC can now present him as the best in the world and it is certainly debatable, but he's really a fighter, not a product of PR."

He also denied that M-1 and Fedor have spoken anytime recently with the UFC. White told a story recently of meeting Fedor face-to-face for the first time. Finkelchtein said that kind of talk was stupidity and was very strong about re-signing with Showtime.

"Now we are in active negotiations with Showtime on a contract extension, and perhaps we will renew it. But the UFC does not offer such opportunities and imposes its monopoly conditions. They believe that everyone should be in the UFC. We would love to fight with Lesnar, and Velasquez and all but why should we give up all these undertakings, all the years spent on Fedor’s development will go to them? Fedor did not grow in the UFC, right? So why should he go to the UFC? If Dana White wants to fight, he can easily hold it, because we do not mind. And while the contract with Showtime gives us more opportunities."

There you have it. Both fighters have fallen in 2010 but neither side is going to budge when it comes to getting Fedor to the world's biggest stage.

In the New Jersey office of longtime NBA agent Keith Glass, there is a sign that says everything about the dog-eat-dog world in which he works.

"It's from Mark Twain, and it (reads), 'I'll always do right, which will surprise some people and astonish the rest,' " Glass said, "It's as simple as that."

If only he were right.

The agent business has never been a simple one, and some of the league's longest-tenured professionals say it has become increasingly more complicated in recent years.

And even dirtier than usual.

Agents are stealing clients in the boldest of ways, looking for a weakness in the business relationship between a player and his representative and using any means necessary to exploit it. Some players and their family members or friends aren't any better, pressuring agents to bend -- no, make that break -- the rules and take their operation under the table if they hope to be the chosen representative. The only law enforcement in this Wild West city is the players' union, which certainly has regulations in place but has had neither the time nor the resources to enforce them.

Former football star Herschel Walker had said he wanted to step up to face a higher level of competition when he participates in his second professional mixed martial arts fight on December 4. But that's not going to happen.

Instead, Strikeforce has matched Walker up with Scott Carson, a 40-year-old whose only fight in the last nine years was a first-round knockout loss.

Carson got involved in MMA in the 1990s and has a 4-1 professional record, having won four fights against little-known opponents before leaving MMA in 2001. He returned to the cage this year and was knocked out in less than three minutes by Lorenz Larkin.

Philip Rivers threw for four touchdowns, including a go-ahead score to Seyi Ajirotutu with 5:17 left and the San Diego Chargers rallied past the Houston Texans 29-23 Sunday. The Chargers played without star tight end Antonio Gates, top receivers Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee and lost running back Ryan Mathews during the game to an ankle problem.

But the Chargers fought through the injuries and more special teams mistakes to win back-to-back games for the first time this season. Their defense also came up with two critical fourth-down stops in the fourth quarter, the last time stuffing quarterback Matt Schaub's rushed sneak for no gain with 3:41 remaining.

Finally, with Houston driving and closing in on the potential winning score, San Diego safety Paul Oliver intercepted a pass that first went in and out of the hands of receiver Andre Johnson. The diving interception by Oliver in the final moments survived a replay review as San Diego ended a four-game drought without forcing a turnover.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Even before the Breeders' Cup Classic was run, a case could be made for this being Todd Pletcher's weekend. By the 10th race of the two-day, 14-race Cup program, Pletcher-trained horses had won three times, including one race that he had never won, the Juvenile. He crossed that off his list when Uncle Mo, the favorite, blew away the field down the stretch to win in a rout.

"You know, I don't get goosebumps very often watching a horse race, and that's not because I'm not a huge horse-racing fan -- but that was a pretty special performance,'' Pletcher said afterward. "I was literally shaking a little bit after the race. It was just unbelievable.''

On Friday, Pletcher-trained horses won the Juvenile Fillies Turf with More Than Real, and earlier Saturday, Pluck opened the day's card with a win in the Juvenile Turf. In each of the Saturday wins, his horse burst away late in the race to win, and Pluck was especially lucky because he was to the immediate left of Rough Sailing when that ill-fated colt fell, broke a bone in his right foreleg and had to be put down.

After the Juvenile win, Pletcher spent more time complimenting jockey John Velasquez and owner Mike Repole than talking about his own success. He did not, however, hesitate when asked about Uncle Mo's Kentucky Derby prospects.

"We're gonna do everything we can to make sure that Uncle Mo comes back here in May in great shape. if it happens, we'll be thankful,'' Pletcher said, adding, "While, obviously, we would all love to win the Kentucky Derby, we love winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, too.'' Pletcher's Super Saver won last May's Derby.

Pletcher's horse in the Classic, Quality Road, finished last, stopping six furlongs into the race. There was no word on whether he was injured. Quality Road was scratched at the gate in last year's Classic at Santa Anita after being unable to settle down.
