UFC 125 Results: Brad Tavares TKOs Phil Baroni

by Michael David SmithBrad Tavares made quick work of Phil Baroni at UFC 125 on Saturday night, struggling briefly in the first round but ultimately winning by first-round technical knockout to improve his professional record to 7-0.

Tavares backed Baroni up with leg kicks in the first minute of the fight, and Baroni, who prides himself on being a brawler, looked surprisingly tentative. But Baroni then stunned Tavares with a big punch that knocked him down, and for the next couple of minutes Baroni was in control.

Cole Aldrich Re-Assigned to D-League, Hopes to Avoid Foul Trouble

Cole Aldrich was recalled from the NBA D-League's Tulsa 66ers on Dec. 6, but after appearing in just two games for the Oklahoma City Thunder, he's been sent back to the Development League for a bit more development.

Aldrich, the 11th overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, has played in a total of seven games for the Thunder this season with a season-high of 14 minutes in a Nov. 7 meeting with the Boston Celtics in which the 6-foot-11 center grabbed four rebounds but missed his only shot attempt of the game.

In the D-League, Aldrich has fared better on his way to averaging 7.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in five starts, but the former Kansas Jayhawk has struggled mightily with fouls, limiting the amount of court time he's able to see. In five games, he's racked up 26 fouls, something he mentioned in his personal blog during the last time he was in the D-League.

"Also, you get called for some things that you don't get called for in the League," Aldrich wrote. "Maybe you get anticipated for a call when you actually don't foul a guy, or other situations where you just play through in the League."

Silva overpowers Vera, smashes his nose in win at UFC 125

Brandon Vera just can't figure it out. He was great at heavyweight, but his drop to light heavyweight has been riddled with lackluster fights. It happened again tonight as Thiago Silva took him down then held him down and beat upon him for 13-of-15 minutes rolling to a unanimous decision win, 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27.

Vera was helpless throughout and really showed no sense of urgency. Even when the fight ended, Vera with a horribly crooked, broken nose, sort of clowned with the crowd.

That attitude was shocking considering Vera had just dropped to 3-4 at 205 pounds with the UFC. This loss makes it three straight loss for Vera (11-6, 7-6 UFC). He's in jeopardy of being cut by the promotion.

This was a great bounceback victory for Silva, who was incredibly dangerous during a close loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 108. Silva had Evans hurt badly in that fight, but lacked stamina down the stretch. He claimed a back injury had kept from normal training.

Silva hadn't fought since Jan. 2 of 2010. Entering this fight, he looked much better physically and had plenty of energy for all 15 minutes.

Silva (15-2, 6-2 UFC) so dominated down the stretch that he pinned Vera on the cage for the final three minutes. Sitting on Vera's back, Silva began to open-hand slap the Filipino-American. He even slapped a little tune on his back. In the final minute, he unloaded with some heavy punches. That's when it looked like Silva put a huge dent into Vera's schnoz.

Twin Brothers Jarron and Jason Collins Look and Play Alike

It hasn't happened since March 1, 2008. But it just might Sunday.

That would be Collins vs. Collins. And Clippers forward Ryan Gomes is ready.

"I'll make sure I definitely get a DVD of that game,'' Gomes said. "They should pay-per-view it. They do it with Manny Pacquiao. But they need to put this one out.''

OK, so Gomes is joking. But it still would be fun to watch if Clippers reserve center Jarron Collins and his twin, Atlanta backup pivot Jason Collins, battle each other at the Staples Center for what would be the 11th time in their NBA careers.

They're both 10-year veterans from Stanford, but they usually have been in opposite conferences, meaning their teams usually meet just twice a season. Throw in some DNP-CDs (for you novices, that's "did not play - coach's decision") for each, and their meetings have been further limited.

When they do face each other, it's like one is playing against himself.

Clay Guida: 'The road to victory is built in the RV'

Our friends from Fight! Magazine bring us a look at Clay Guida and his spartan lifestyle while training in New Mexico for his UFC 125 bout with Takanori Gomi. 

While working on his fight game in New Mexico, Guida stays on an RV that he parks on a reservation. It's not the most conventional digs for a professional athlete, but it works for him.

Guida talks about how his training has changed since joining Greg Jackson's Camp. He's been doing more than officiating chicken nugget-eating contests. The training is more structured and he can constantly work on the fundamentals. Since going to Jackson's, he's 2-1, beating Shannon Gugerty and Rafael dos Anjos. Will that be enough to beat Gomi?

TCU No Cinderella Story in Rose Bowl Win

PASADENA, Calif. -- Everything came up roses for Texas Christian University on Saturday, except for the part about how college football crowns its national champion.

The No. 3 Horned Frogs defeated No. 5 Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, 21-19, behind the playmaking of senior quarterback Andy Dalton and linebacker Tank Carder, but the sport's crystal trophy will go not to unbeaten TCU, but the winner of the Jan. 10 BCS title game between Oregon and Auburn.

What else could TCU (13-0) have done to state its case as national champion?

Nothing, short of piling even more style points against Mountain West Conference teams during the season.

The Horned Frogs led the nation in total defense and averaged 43 points per game, and they did themselves one better on Saturday when they outquicked, outpassed and outcoached a very good Wisconsin team. While all of that will not be enough to put TCU atop the final AP and coaches polls, the Horned Frogs enjoyed both the journey and especially its fragrant ending.

"We did everything we were capable of doing," Dalton said. "I guess it's just the way the system is. But in my time here at TCU, we never thought we'd have a chance to play in the Rose Bowl."

Maurice Jones-Drew Likely to Have Knee Surgery Following Season

Jacksonville Pro Bowl tailback Maurice Jones-Drew reportedly will undergo knee surgery once the Jaguars' season is officially over.

Jones-Drew, who ranks fourth in the NFL in rushing with 1,324 yards, has a torn meniscus, according to The Florida Times-Union, and needs arthroscopic surgery to repair the damage. He was held out of last week's game against Washington and already had been ruled out for Sunday's regular-season finale at Houston.

"Maurice played through the issues he's been dealing with," Coach Jack Del Rio said. "Right now we're going to go through the rest of this week and see how much closer we can get him to being ready to go."

Neither Jones-Drew nor the Jaguars (8-7) may be going anywhere after Sunday.

Yes, the Jaguars still have an outside shot at winning the AFC South Division title. They have to beat the Texans and the Indianapolis Colts have to lose at home to the Tennessee Titans. Under that scenario -- and with two weeks to rest the knee -- the team thinks Jones-Drew would have a shot to be able to play in a wild-card round game.

Missed Opportunities, Questionable Decisions Mar Rose Bowl for Wisconsin

PASADENA, Calif. -- Throughout 2010, Wisconsin went 11-1 with a simple formula: Pound defenses with an overpowering running game and play mistake-free football.

But on the first day of 2011, in their most important game of the season, the Badgers strayed from their winning script -- and it cost them the Rose Bowl. That's no dig at Texas Christian. The No. 3 Horned Frogs played hard, played fast and showed why any undefeated team -- regardless of conference affiliation -- should be invited to a Bowl Championship Series game. But TCU's 21-19 win was defined as much by Wisconsin's mistakes, missed opportunities and questionable coaching calls
as it was by the Horned Frogs' stout play.

At several critical junctures on Saturday, Wisconsin simply made uncharacteristic flubs, and most of the damage was self-inflicted. The Badgers came into Saturday's matchup as the least-penalized team in the country, averaging just three flags a game. Against TCU, coach Bret Bielema's team committed six penalties, including a critical defensive pass interference in the third quarter that allowed TCU to avoid a third and long deep in its own half.

While Wisconsin, playing in its fourth Rose Bowl since 1994, did not commit any turnovers, the Badgers dropped passes, fumbled a snap and literally ran into each other on defense. A collision between defensive backs Niles Brinkley and Jay Valai allowed TCU tailback Ed Wesley to scoot free for a 33-yard catch-and-run on TCU's opening drive of the second half. The Horned Frogs scored their third and final touchdown three plays later.

"What got us here was clean execution and clean, disciplined football, and we didn't do that today," said Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien, who completed 12 of 21 passes for 159 yards, but often held on to the ball too long. He was sacked twice, hit hard on a handful of other occasions, and overthrew or failed to see open receivers on several other occasions.

"Not getting rid of the ball quicker, that's what I can control, and I didn't do that," said Tolzien. "It hurt us today."

WEC 53's Three Stars: Pettis, Wineland and Cruz

The WEC went out with a bang on Thursday night, leaving MMA fans with memories of crazy kicks, talented fighters and another reliably exciting card. Who rose above?

No. 1 star -- Anthony Pettis: This was an easy choice. Pettis won the WEC lightweight belt by realizing that he was in a razor-close fight, and then hitting one of the craziest moves MMA fans have ever seen. His off-the-wall kick made Sportscenter's top plays and was nothing short of Matrix-esque. The scary thing about Pettis is that he's just 23 years old.

No. 2 star -- Eddie Wineland: The WEC's first bantamweight champ closed the promotion with a humongous slam knockout of Ken Stone. His first-round KO was Wineland's fourth win in a row. Though Urijah Faber is the obvious next contender for Dominick Cruz's belt, Wineland is making a case to be in the upper echelon of the UFC bantamweights.

No. 3 star -- Dominick Cruz: The new UFC bantamweight champ didn't finish Scott Jorgensen, but that has more to do with Jorgensen's stone chin than Cruz's lack of ability. Cruz executed a perfect gameplan, sticking and moving throughout the entire fight and taking down Jorgensen with ease. On Twitter last night, I heard fans say that Cruz didn't engage, and that's just crazy talk. Cruz engaged; Jorgensen just couldn't keep up with him. For those who don't like his quick-footed style ... haters gonna hate. 

A special mention to the WEC: World Extreme Cagefighting earned the reputation of always giving fans exciting cards. Last night was no different. Though the main card had a few less-than-exciting rounds, the main events delivered. As that promotion ends and gives way to the UFC, one last kudos to the little promotion that could.

The results are in, Cagewriter readers, and good news. You ARE the father. Wait, no. This isn't an episode of Maury. This is Cagewriter's look at the best of the year, where we put the control in your hands. Here are your choices for the best of mixed martial arts in 2011.

After more than 5,800 votes, 41 percent of you chose Chris Leben's win over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116 as the fight of the year. Chan Sung Jung's scrap with Leonard Garcia was a close second with 33 percent.

Of the more than 4,400 votes cast, 43 percent were for Anderson Silva's submission of Chael Sonnen as the best finish in 2010. Cain Velasquez's KO of Brock Lesnar came in second place. 

WEC's final lightweight champ was the overwhelming choice for the fighter who made his breakthrough this year. Anthony Pettis took 52 percent of the 4,400+ votes cast, followed by George Sotiropoulos.

With nearly 9,000 votes, you still couldn't make up your collective hive mind. The fighter of the year vote is a tie, 34 percent for UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and 34 percent for UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.

Nickey Van Exel, Son of Former NBA Star Nick Van Exel, Charged With Murder

Nickey Van Exel, the 20-year-old son of former NBA great Nick Van Exel, is being held on $1 million bond after being charged with one count of capital murder in Dallas, according to police.

Van Exel is being held on the felony count of murdering Bradley Bassey Eyo, described by police as a close friend.

Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel's attorney, told The Associated Press that Van Exel and Eyo were allegedly playing with a shotgun at a home in Garland, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, when the gun accidentally fired. Johnson further explained that Van Exel "panicked" and moved the body, dumping it less than a mile away in nearby Lake Ray Hubbard.

Nickey Van Exel turned himself into Dallas police on Wednesday and has admitted to the murder, police said, although he insists it was an accident.

"It's a real sad situation," Johnson said. "Emotions are running high, and, obviously, we recognize that some very bad decisions were made on how he responded."

The senior Van Exel played 13 years in the NBA, appearing in 880 games and starting 670. He averaged 14.4 points and 6.6 assists per game in his career and was known as both a clutch shooter and 3-point specialist. He remains ranked No. 6 in NBA history in 3-point field goals made.

Nick Van Exel played for six different teams in the NBA, most notably the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as the Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers and retired after a final season in 2005-06 with the San Antonio Spurs.

Nick Van Exel is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks, where he specializes in player development instruction.

No information has been released yet about a hearing date for the younger Van Exel.

NBA Power Rankings: Heat Rises

It took a little while but thanks to injuries or recent losses by the usual suspects, along with playing some stellar, dominating basketball over an extended period of time, the Miami Heat finally made it to the top of our Rankings this week. The Orlando Magic are creeping up too, while the Celtics took a tumble because of their recent injury situation getting a whole lot worse with the short-term loss of Kevin Garnett.

Cruz makes UFC bantamweight history with victory at WEC 53

Dominick Cruz made MMA history, defending the WEC bantamweight title and earning the first-ever UFC bantamweight title with a dominating win over Scott Jorgensen at WEC 53 in Glendale, Ariz. on Thursday night. On all three judges cards, Cruz won 50-45.

Cruz started the fight just as expected. He did not stop moving, throwing combinations and leg kicks, then dancing away from Jorgensen. When Jorgensen could get a hand on Cruz, he tried to take him down but had to settle for a clinch. He could only hold the clinch for a few seconds, as Cruz broke away and returned to the constantly moving stand-up. As the round ended, Jorgensen took Cruz down, but couldn't stay on his back. Cruz rolled out and ended up on top of Jorgensen.

Even with Cruz continuing his stick-and-move game, Jorgensen was able to land a few more punches early in the second round, opening a cut on the bridge of Cruz's nose. Cruz took Jorgensen down halfway through the round and followed that up with damaging elbows. They returned to their feet near the end of the round, but Jorgensen couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

With Jorgensen's eyes swelling up, Cruz turned up the pressure in the third round. He wobbled Jorgensen with a right hand early. Jorgensen returned to his feet, but Cruz didn't slow. He followed up with kicks to the head and body, all the while dodging and moving between strikes. With a minute left in the round, Cruz hit a beautiful takedown. After that, Jorgensen came close to being able to generate offense, reversing Cruz and taking his back, but Cruz slipped out and returned to his feet.

By the fourth round, Jorgensen needed a home run as he was clearly behind in points. Jorgensen came out strong early, but every time he seemed to get going, Cruz took him down and followed with nasty strikes. Jorgensen, a Division I collegiate wrestler, had no answer for Cruz's kneetap takedown.

Somehow, Cruz did not slow in the fifth and final round. Jorgensen continued to move forward and even got a takedown, but couldn't do anything with it. Cruz answered Jorgensen's takedown with a blast double leg of his own, taking Jorgensen straight down to the canvas.

When the final horn sounded, Cruz walked to the side of the cage where former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber was sitting, and glared at him. Faber is the only man who has beaten Cruz, and he recently dropped to bantamweight. Cruz didn't hesitate to ask for a bout with Faber after the fight. Faber made comments on the WEC pre-show that made it obvious that he would welcome this fight.

Armando Galarraga, Jim Joyce Achieve Much More After Near-Perfect Game

All this week, the FanHouse staff will look back at the most significant baseball storylines of 2010.

Armando Galarraga was better than perfect.

With apologies to Dallas Braden and Roy Halladay and the 18 pitchers before them who had managed to pitch a perfect game in the major leagues, none of them emerged from his day in quite the same way as Galarraga did.

Galarraga had done the physical part. He'd retired all 27 batters the moment his foot hit first base, beating Cleveland's Jason Donald to the bag. All he needed was to wait for umpire Jim Joyce to give the out signal.

That's when this June 2 Tigers-Indians game crossed over from being merely a great performance to one of the most memorable incidents in recent big league history.

John Fox Out After Panthers' Season Finale Sunday

John Fox and his staff will not be back in Carolina next year, the team announced Friday. Fox will coach the Panthers at Atlanta Sunday.

"I told John today that I appreciate everything he has done for us over the last nine years," Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement, "but as happens in this business, it is time for both sides to move in different directions."

The decision comes as no surprise -- the contracts of Fox and his staff are up at the end of the season, and the sides have been rumored to be on the verge of a split all season. Fox holds a 73-72 regular-season record for the Panthers, but Carolina has limped along to an NFL-worst 2-13 mark this season.

Anthony Pettis Uses Amazing Kick to Beat Ben Henderson

by Michael David SmithAnthony Pettis brought the WEC promotion to an end in style on Thursday night, using one of the most incredible kicks in the history of the sport to seal the victory against Ben Henderson at WEC 53.

The kick all but defies description: Pettis jumped into the air, pushed off the fence with his foot and landed an incredible head kick at the end of the fifth round, putting an emphatic ending on his unanimous decision victory. The kick looked like something out of a martial arts movie, but Pettis said it's something he and his coach have been working on.

"Duke Roufus, we practice that all the time," Pettis said. "I've got 10 more of those kicks coming when I'm in the UFC. How do you like that to end the WEC?"

South Florida Beats Clemson in Meineke Car Care Bowl

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Skip Holtz era at South Florida began with an 8-5 record capped by a 31-26 victory against Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in a half-empty Bank of America Stadium Friday afternoon.

The coach who replaced Jim Leavitt this year led the Bulls to a third consecutive bowl victory, continuing a program on the rise in the Big East.

For Clemson, the Kyle Parker era ended with broken ribs and an early exit from his final game as quarterback of the Tigers on his way to a baseball career with the Colorado Rockies.

Parker, a first-round draft pick of the Rockies in June, had opted to play one final season with the Tigers before focusing on baseball. But it was a rocky year as Clemson (6-7) fell below expectations and Parker was unable to build on his impressive 2009 redshirt freshman season when he threw for 2,526 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Parker, who finished with 2,213 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2010, was apparently injured during a run in the final minute of the first half.

Tajh Boyd played the second half for the Tigers in preparation for taking over as starter next season. Parker was 11 of 17 for 134 yards and one interception in his finale; Boyd was 13 of 23 for 112, throwing an interception on the first play of the fourth quarter that led to a South Florida touchdown that put the game out of reach.

O Canada! World?s Most Web Connected Land

According to a recent comScore report, Canada has beaten out the US, the UK, France, and everyone else in the world in various metrics relating to broadband and internet use. While the conspicuous absence of the likes of Sweden, a perennial leader in these categories, fills me with suspicion, the numbers are still fun, and slightly surprising. One statistic calculated to both please and terrify is that, by comScore's measurements, just over half the population of Canada is on Facebook. That amounts to about 16 million people — a drop in the bucket with Facebook's user base — but it's the proportion that matters. US usage is around 40% by some estimates, which is of course significant, but it's fun that Canada has passed us up in this race. I'm guessing it has something to do with the weather up there.
