Hans Grugger, Austrian Skier, Has Brain Operation After Crash

KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) -- Austrian skier Hans Grugger underwent brain surgery Thursday after crashing during a training run for the World Cup downhill on the demanding Streif course.

The Austrian ski federation said Thursday that Grugger was having neurosurgery but declined to reveal more detail until after the operation.

Grugger was brought to a hospital by helicopter in nearby Innsbruck with a brain contusion and a chest injury and was "not responsive," according to federation spokesman Markus Aigner.

Grugger fell after losing balance at the so-called Mausefalle, a long jump shortly after a sharp right turn, and was motionless on the slope.

The hospital medical director Alexandra Kofler told Austrian broadcaster ORF "the patient's condition can only be judged based on the operation and the time immediately afterward."

Grugger was the fifth racer on the course but the first to face troubles in that section.

Obama 'attacks' Volkmann on 'The Tonight Show'

The Jacob Volkmann-Barack Obama "feud" went viral in recent days. Thursday night, it reached new heights with a quick pop on "The Tonight Show" (SEE ABOVE VIDEO). Obviously that is not really President Obama in the clip.

After his win over Antonio McKee at UFC 125, Volkmann said he'd like to fight the president next.

"He's not too bright ... Someone needs to knock some sense into that idiot. I just don't like what Barack is doing," said Volkmann.  

Jay Leno's crew worked a little creative editing and the president gave his answer to the fighter's challenge.

Ronde Barber Returning to Bucs, According to Coach Raheem Morris

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers committed to a youth movement in 2009, but that does not include the veteran cornerback Ronde Barber. He is too good, too valuable, to be swept out the door, so far.

Coach Raheem Morris told Rick Stroud of The St. Petersburg Times that Barber, 35, was going to return for his 15th season in 2011. It is not a gift to a player, who is about the same age as the head coach. There is no room for that in the NFL.

Rather, Barber is a better alternative that youngsters E.J. Biggers and Myron Lewis. Barber had three interceptions and played solid against the run. He was also a leader who knew where he fit and what was expected.

Now, just one problem. Barber needs to be signed. He is a free agent, but there are free agents all over the NFL with the collective bargaining agreement set to expire March 4.

Morris has been known to fire quick from the hip with his comments, but there had to be some cause for his comments.

"He's coming back," Morris told The Times. "He's playing. Now it's just a matter of what he's playing for. I'm really confident that he's playing, and I feel great about it."

Barber had played in 208 games. He is not only skilled; he is reliable. When starting cornerback Aqib Talib went down with a hip injury against the Falcons on Nov. 7, and other starts began dropping like flies, Barber picked up the pace of his play. He was not some doddering old man.

Gilbert Arenas, Stan Van Gundy Still Struggling to Find Common Ground

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Magic coach Stan Van Gundy knows exactly what's wrong with his recently-acquired point guard Gilbert Arenas.

It's the coaching.

Arenas, who was elated with being traded from Washington to Orlando last month, has shown little of the spark he was expected to provide for the Magic, looking more uncomfortable as the season progresses.

Except for that one big game against Cleveland, when he had 22 points and 11 assists, Arenas hardly has looked like the game changer he was expected to be.

"Gil is struggling right now, and the biggest thing he is struggling with now is me,'' said Van Gundy. "I'm harder on point guards than anyone else. He's not playing with a great deal of enthusiasm. He's not enjoying playing. And I'm a big reason. There is an adjustment he's going to have to make.''

Sunday Personal for Santonio Holmes -- Whether He Admits It or Not

FLORHAM PARK, NJ -- Jets safety Drew Coleman was in the weight room with receiver Santonio Holmes on Wednesday afternoon at the team's complex. It was a few minutes before Holmes chatted with reporters about his second trip to Pittsburgh and second encounter with the Steelers in barely a month. Holmes and the Jets won the last time. This time, for the AFC championship on Sunday, it is a more extravagant expedition.

Holmes played his first four pro seasons in Pittsburgh before the Steelers kicked him to the Jets in a trade last April. It makes sense that Holmes would see red any time he confronts Steelers' black and gold. Coleman thought so.

"I asked him if this was a good way for another shot at redemption,'' Coleman said. "He said, 'I already got the personal thing out of the way in the last game. This is about the Jets. This is not about me.'''

In his news conference, Holmes repeated that spiel. The personal thing is out of the way, he said. It is not his focus, he said. He just sees the Steelers as a team in the Jets' way, he insisted.

Holmes was good. It was a convincing show.

And it was pure theater.

NFL Draft 2011 Breaks Record for Underclassmen Declaring Early

One season after tying an all-time high for non-senior draft declarations, those college kids are at it again.

A record 56 players with NCAA eligibility remaining have declared for the 2011 NFL Draft, surpassing last year's total by three. The list of 56 does not include Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the player widely considered to be drafted first overall as recently as a few weeks ago.

Without a new collective bargaining agreement in place, the players leaving the college ranks behind are risking the chance that there may be no professional football to be played in 2011. Should that transpire -- and every day without a new CBA in place increases the chances of that scenario becoming a reality -- the declared prospects would be ineligible to rejoin their former teams for the 2011 season.

Last season, 14 of the 32 players selected in the first round of the draft left college early. According to FanHouse's mock draft from early January, 15 of the 56 declared non-seniors could be taken in the first round in 2011. FanHouse included eight non-seniors in the top 10 picks, but only Justin Blackmon chose to return to school.

Anne Hathaway Will 'Go There' As Catwoman In 'Dark Knight Rises'

'Hathaway has longevity, a steady career arc and growth in appearing in big films,' a studio source tells MTV News of her casting.

Given the overwhelming, worldwide success of "Batman Begins" and, even more so, "The Dark Knight," any time there's news about Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," it make headlines.

Case in point: Wednesday's (January 19) big announcement from Warner Bros. about the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) and the unveiling of Tom Hardy's role as the formidable, villainous Bane.

Regarding Hathaway's casting, who has been linked to the film via various rumors that started last November, a source at Warner Bros. told MTV News that the "Love & Other Drugs" star is a great choice to play the femme fatale.

"She definitely has the [acting] chops," the studio source said. "She can 'go there' with this role. Obviously, Chris [Nolan] sees something in her that's fantastic that we haven't seen or have seen ... plus Hathaway has longevity, a steady career arc and growth in appearing in big films."

Hathaway is, after all, an Oscar-nominated actress (in 2009, for her performance in "Rachel Getting Married"). She first captured the hearts of young girls everywhere in Disney films like "The Princess Diaries" and "Ella Enchanted," which showcased both a feminine vulnerability and modern, sassy takes on the traditional "princess" stereotype. From there, Hathaway's highlights include a supporting role in "Brokeback Mountain"; the action/comedy "Get Smart," where we saw her more mature, sexy side as Agent 99, the perfect foil to Steve Carell's bumbling Maxwell Smart; a starring role in "The Devil Wears Prada," opposite Meryl Streep; and her darker, subversive and ultimately award-worthy performance in "Rachel."

So, in looking at Hathaway's résumé, particularly her film choices over the past few years, she looks to be prepared for this next great leap into Nolan's darker, edgier Gotham City — no matter whether Nolan chooses to make his Selina Kyle more villainous or more love interest.

Stann TKOs 'toughest guy in the UFC' at UFC 125

In his second bout at middleweight, Brian Stann used his power to take out Chris Leben, winning in a first round TKO at UFC 125 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Stann beat Leben down in the first round, first wobbling him with a right hand. Leben crumbled to the ground after another right hand, but worked back to his feet. Stann continued the onslaught, throwing knees and punches, trying to put Leben away. After Leben got back to his feet twice, only to fall back down to his knee, the fight was stopped at 3:37 of the first round. 

After the bout, Stann said that he wanted this bout because he knew Leben would be a test.

"I asked for Chris Leben because he is the toughest guy on the UFC roster," Stann said. "I'm ecstatic, but golly can this guy take some shots!"

Stann earned his 10th victory at UFC 125, pushing his record to 10-3. Leben, an alumnus of the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter," falls to 25-7.

Stann, a captain in the Marines, emotionally dedicated the fight to one of his Marines who died this week in Afghanistan.

Reports: Tom Brady Played With Stress Fracture During Season

After the New England Patriots were upset by the New York Jets on Sunday, many quizzical looks were exchanged around water coolers on Monday. Why did Tom Brady, who threw his first interception since Week 6 and posted a QB rating under 90 for the first time since Week 7, turn in such an un-Brady-like performance? Could injury be involved?

It turns out Brady was playing injured; specifically, with a stress fracture on his foot. However, according to Tom Curran of CSNNE.com, the New England quarterback has been dealing with the stress fracture all year, including during the incredible run he had in the second half of the 2010 season. Curran went on to note a source's opinion that the stress fracture had little to no impact on the Pro Bowl quarterback's performance in the playoff loss to the Jets.

According to Monique Walker of the Boston Globe, the injury isn't expected to keep Brady out of this year's NFL Pro Bowl, held January 30 in Hawaii.

BCS Championship TV Audience Biggest in Cable History

There were those who questioned the wisdom of Disney obtaining, then moving, all of the Bowl Championship Series games off broadcast television and onto cable.

Let the questioning cease, as ESPN gleefully announced Tuesday that the audience for Monday's BCS championship game between Auburn and Oregon was the largest in cable television history.

Not ESPN history or sports television history, but in all of cable history.

The game, won 22-19 by Auburn on a last second field goal, was seen by 27,316,000 viewers and in 17,718,000 households, according to Nielsen numbers released by ESPN, which says that the number surpasses the previous all-time cable record, an Oct. 5, 2009 Monday Night Football game between Green Bay and Minnesota, which was seen by 21,839,000 viewers and in 15,136,000 homes.

"ESPN's inaugural telecasts of the BCS culminated with a thrilling finish viewed by a record audience," said George Bodenheimer, ESPN president in a prepared statement. "The BCS was a huge win for fans who through our television, radio and digital platforms enjoyed more coverage, more analysis and more ways to connect with their sport than ever before."

ESPN reports that, compared to numbers for an over-the-air broadcast -- which are typically higher than for cable -- the 15.3 rating was higher than four of the 12 BCS title games, while the 27 million viewers was higher than eight of the 12 BCS title games.

Guillard and the UFC honored to be fighting for the troops

The military has given to him, so Melvin Guillard is happy to give back. The same goes for UFC president Dana White.

The promotion is just a few days away from putting on its third fight card on a U.S. military base. This time it's Ft. Hood in Texas and the UFC is hoping to exceed the $4 million it raised in late 2008 with a fight card in Fayetteville, N.C. 

"I'm going to give these guys a show," Guillard said during the "Fight for the Troops 2" teleconference. "You know, they work so hard to protect us every year, year after year. Some of them give up going overseas and got to live there for years at a time. And, you know, this is a blessing for me to even be asked to give a performance that I'm going to give these guys next week -- and guys and girls. So to me, it's just all part of being an American and I'm honored."

Guillard knows first hand of the sacrifice.

"I stay right now in Albuquerque with Staff Sergeant Chris Molina and his family. This is where I stay when I come here. So, you know, getting the military experience of staying with families, you know, seeing what these guys go through to protect our country, I've actually had chances to visit certain military bases and I also have a ton of friends in high school that got out of high school that’s in military, whether it's Marine Corps or Army or Air Force or whatever," said Guillard.

White decided Ft. Hood was a good spot this time around after seeing the work done by the Fisher family in Texas and around the country.

"What happened was we got invited down there and I went down. It was the first time I'd ever seen anything like that -- when I visited the hospital and what these guys, you know, the Fisher family who started this thing, what they’ve done for the troops here fighting in the United States, it's -- I can't even -- I can't put it into words for you. When these kids get injured, you know, you’ve got these 18-, 19-, 20-year-old kids that are getting injured over there -- they come back, it's sad to say but the government doesn’t take care of them, which is mind boggling," said White.

"So this family has put together this thing where -- and if you're a parent of one of these kids, I mean anybody who's on this call who has kids can understand. Your kid gets his arms, legs blown off, his face is melted -- the horrible things that happen to these guys -- and they're laying in a hospital bed out in the middle of Nowhere, Virginia, what do you do? You know what you do? You quit your job, you lose everything you have and you drive out there and you live in your car and you sit in a chair in the bed next to them."

The UFC raised $4 million around Fight for the Troops 1 and is hoping to eclipse that number this time. The proceeds this year will benefit the 53 Fisher Houses around the U.S. and in Germany and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

"Fight for the Troops" goes down this Saturday on Spike (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

UConn Hires Paul Pasqualoni as Coach

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Former Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni is heading back to the Big East as football coach at Connecticut.

UConn athletic director Jeff Hathaway announced the hiring Thursday and said a news conference introducing Pasqualoni, who grew up in Cheshire, would be held a 12:30 p.m. Friday.

"We are very proud to welcome Paul Pasqualoni to the UConn family and also bring him back home to his native Connecticut," Hathaway said in a statement. "Paul brings an outstanding coaching background to UConn on the collegiate, professional and high school level. He also is a man of strong character and integrity and we look forward to him developing our football student-athletes in the classroom, on the field and as part of the community."

Pasqualoni had been the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, taking the position in November after the firing of coach Wade Phillips, who also handled the defensive duties.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett both released statements Thursday praising Pasqualoni.

"He has everything that a college program would want from a leadership perspective," Garrett said. "He knows the game, and he is very effective at coaching and teaching every aspect of the game. We wish nothing but the best for Coach P. and his family. I know our players and his fellow coaches here in Dallas will miss him very much."

The 61-year-old replaces Randy Edsall, who took the head coaching job at Maryland after leading UConn to an 8-5 season and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl, where the Huskies lost to Oklahoma 48-20.

Edsall coached for 12 years at UConn leading the team from Division I-AA into the Big East, where his teams won a share of the conference championship in 2007 and this past season.

Since becoming a full Division I-A (now Football Bowl Subdivision) team in 2002, Connecticut is 65-46.

Pasqualoni was chosen over former University of Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, who had been in negotiations for the job earlier this week, according to a source in the athletic department.

That person spoke on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorized to release the information.

Pasqualoni compiled a 107-59-1 record in 14 years at Syracuse before being fired after the 2004 season. He took the Orange to nine bowls, won three consecutive Big East Conference titles from 1996 to 1998 and shared the title with West Virginia in 2004.

Pasqualoni began his coaching career in 1972 at Cheshire High school, his alma mater.

He also was the head coach and athletic director at Western Connecticut from 1982-86, leading his 1985 team to a 10-2 record and a spot in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

He has served as a defensive coach in the NFL with both the Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins.

Battling Without Bosh, Miami Heat Drop Fourth Straight Game

MIAMI -- There's something about the Atlanta Hawks and the Miami Heat that bring out the worst in each other. Tuesday night was no exception, and it was easily one of the uglier losses for the Heat so far this season.

Exactly two weeks had passed since the Heat had played at the AmericanAirlines Arena and the rust was apparent from both the team and a crowd waiting for a spark to get them off their seats. After winning 21 of 22 games, the Heat have cooled off with their longest losing streak of the season at four in a row. The health of the Big 3 has been a big factor in their recent struggles as Chris Bosh missed his first game of the season while Dwyane Wade and LeBron James sat out practice the day before as they nursed an assortment of injuries. Refusing to give excuses, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra chose instead to look forward despite their recent setback.

Brett Favre: Packers Will Win Super Bowl

Brett Favre's third retirement appears to be one that will last, and as the gunslinger walks off into the sunset, he's got some kind words for the team he made his legend with.

Favre e-mailed ESPN's Ed Werder, saying he thinks the Packers will "win it all," and that he hopes they do.

"[Packers QB] Aaron [Rodgers] is the best QB and the receiving corps is the best ever, maybe," Favre said in the e-mail. "But [defensive coordinator] Dom [Capers] and the defense gets the MVP award at this stage.

Favre filed his retirement papers with the league, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's done; in 2008, Favre filed the same papers upon his retirement with the Packers.

Still, it seems this time Favre is really done. Meanwhile, the quarterback who waited on the bench for him to depart Green Bay, Rodgers, is excelling.

"There is no bitterness. I'm happy for them and very happy and content with my legacy."

Report: Lance Armstrong Caught With Drugs by Customs Officials in 2003

Lance Armstrong was caught with drugs by Swiss customs officials in 2003 and the seven-time Tour de France champ tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone on three occasions, Sports Illustrated will report in the Jan. 24 issue.

"Lance had a bag of drugs and s---," disgraced rider Floyd Landis told the magazine. "They wanted to search it, which was out of the ordinary."

Agents who searched Armstrong's belongings after he arrived with teammates via a private charter found syringes and drugs with labels written in Spanish. Armstrong asked a teammate to convince the agents that the products were injectable vitamins. Landis said the agents "looked at us sideways, but let us through."

Armstrong, who won his Tour de France titles consecutively from 1999-2005, has maintained he's never used performance-enhancing drugs. A grand jury in Los Angeles has met for months to determine whether Armstrong was part of a criminal conspiracy to purchase performance-enhancing drugs.
